In this year’s mobile world congress (MWC) one of the major announcement was the release of a revised Nokia 3310. The device is set to cost about $65 which is not a bad price for even a device that lacks smart functionalities. Gretel on the other hand announced the launch of its latest smartphone and has decided to go all out against Nokia’s 3310. The Gretel A7 which is Gretel flagship feature phone costs only $39 which is significantly cheaper than the Nokia 3310 phone.


In its presentation the firm pointed out that Gretel A7 in comparison to Nokia’s device and was able to put together a nice comparison overview. It pointed out that while Nokia 3310 is a 2G phone with a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 screen without capacitive touch functionality, the Gretel A7 is a 3G smartphone with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. The Gretel A7 is the tech firm’s way of proving that it is very possible to get a decent smartphone at a relatively affordable amount of money.


Although the Gretel A7 does not feature any spectacular design just the normal rounded touchscreen build. For an extremely cheap smartphone like this, it is not expected to show any spectacular design or build. However, the Gretel A7 is neither ugly looking nor does it radiate any beauty it is just somewhat in the middle has a day to day smartphone. It feature a dimension of 134.8 x 66.3 x 9.2 mm which is similar to what most compact 5-inch smartphone have. As expected the smartphone is made of plastic and weighs about 136g. However it as an impressive screen to body ratio of 68.14%.

The front panel houses the earpiece which is at the top which has a slightly wide frame, at the bottom there are the normal three capacitive buttons which is offscreen by the way. The back panel is removable and has the camera at the top left corner and a LED flash light at the side. The speaker is placed directly below at the bottom left corner. There is the volume rocker and power button at the left side and a micro USB port and microphone at the bottom of the device.

As pointed out earlier the Gretel A7 has a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 pixel resolution IPS display with an impressive 312 ppi. There is also a Corning Gorilla Glass that protects the screen from day to day minimal damages.


The Gretel A7 is powere by MediaTek’s MT6580A quad core processor which is the cheapest for smartphones. It has four ARM Cortex-A7 cores that clocks at 1.3GHz with an outdated 32-bit architecture. For handling graphics it has a Mali 400 MP2 GPU with 2 core. Part of Gretels presentation was in terms of the Gretel A7’s internal memory which lies at 1GB and an internal storage capacity of 8GB and can be expanded using a micro SD card to 32GB. The device also runs on an Android 6.0 Marshmallow which can be updated to the recent Android 7.0.


Gretel’s A7 smartphone has a battery capacity of 2000mAh, rear camera of 8MP and a front camera of 2MP.
