LineageOS is the most popular custom ROM for Android devices. It is often used as a basis for other custom ROMs such as Resurrection Remix. There are other ROMs – such as OmniROM – that are equally popular but are also substantially based on LineageOS.
Thanks to the efforts of the OpenKirin project, the unofficial versions of LineageOS, Resurrection Remix and OmniROM are now available on some Huawei phones and also the Honor sub-brand: it is Honor 8, Honor Note 8, Huawei P9 / Huawei P9 Plus and Huawei Mate 8.
These builds are made possible on those devices thanks to the Project Treblesupport , which is the solution devised by Google to avoid fragmentation and allow the various devices to get quickly and consistently the various Android updates. The support has been introduced by the Mountain View giant since Android 8.0 Oreo : it is a system update software defined as “modular”, as it is able to keep separate low-level drivers – that is the part of the operating system which needs to be updated by the individual producer – from the remaining part of the operating system. Project Treble has found a huge consensus in the manufacturers of mobile devices, so much so that its diffusion is now very wide.
The OpenKirin team released for the first time builds for other Huawei and Honor devices in June, however, with the latest versions, the range of devices has clearly expanded, and the team has had to work further on these new products. One of the most interesting details that catch the eye with the latest builds is the inclusion of a working camera and network switch so that they can be used as a daily driver.
All OpenKirin builds and necessary instructions are available on the official project website. However, users can find more information by visiting the forum of their device.
