The new feature which allows you to respond with an emoji from Slack’s extensive built-in collection is excellent. However, personalizing any place is what really makes it feel like home. That’s why, in this guide, I will show you how to add your emoji to your workspace.

Take note that by default, all users on Slack except guest users can add emojis to Slack. Unfortunately, you will need to leave the default setting enable or limit the feature to only workspace owners and admins. As such, guest users are out of luck.

How to Add Custom Emoji to Slack

First off, you need an emoji that can be accessed from your computer. The ideal size of the emoji is 128 x 128 pixels. If you provide a format other than that, Slack will compress it down to 128 x 128 pixels.

Note: Make sure to remember that the emojis you upload are licensed for commercial use only if you are using your company’s slack.

Once you have gotten an emoji, you would like to use, click the arrow next to the name of your workspace right at the top of the left sidebar.

Next up, a menu will appear. On the menu, click Customize Slack.

The “Customize Your Workspace” will come up with various tabs. The Emoji tab is what we are interested in. From it, click the “Add Custom Emoji” option.

Next, click “Upload Image” and select the emoji from your computer.

Now, enter the name you would like to give to your emoji. This is what you’ll type to search for it in the emoji picker or to add it directly to a message using a: (colon).

When you are done, click “Save” to save your changes.

Now, you should see your emoji in the custom emoji list. All users in your workspace will now be able to use it in a message or response.

An emoji can also be deleted and quite easily at that. You can even delete any custom emoji if you’re an administrator. To do this, simply click on the x icon to the right of the emoji.

That’s all!
