HTC U11 review - Rear camera with dual flashlight

Back in January, HTC introduced the “U series” of smartphones. About two different devices have been released into the “U series” with the latest being the HTC U11 smartphone.

The HTC U11 is HTC’s flagship device for the year and it is the succeeding smartphone to last year’s HTC 10. The HTC U11 is way better than the HTC 10(as expected) with distinctive features like the all-glass back, absence of the conventional 3.5mm headphone jack, Google Assistant, 12MP ultra-sharp rear camera and HTC’s own Sense Companion AI. The HTC U11 has been launched and is already up for sale in the USA from June 9.

DESIGN

One of the most obvious and appealing feature of the HTC U11 is the beauty aesthetic of the device. The U11 has an all-glass back with a glossy look that always pushes you to touch the device every minute. However, there’s a bad side to the shinny glass back – it retains fingerprints.

The arrangement and locations of the hardware components of the device is also top-notch. The volume adjustment buttons can be found at the right side of the HTC U11 and the power button just right below the volume keys.

At the bottom, there’s a singular USB Type-C port for charging the HTC U11 and it doubles as the headphone jack. This is one similarity the HTC U11 has with the iPhone 7 and 7 plus; the USB Type-C headphone jack.

On the top lives the SIM card and micro SD card slot.

There’s a physical home button at the front of the HTC U11. This home button isn’t much conspicuous and bulging, and it doubles as the fingerprint sensor.

While the back of the HTC U11 is made of glass, the sides are made of aluminum. And on the lower sides of the device, there are hidden sensors embedded that triggers/activates the unique Edge Sense feature.

Edge Sense

The sensors at the lower ends of the HTC U11’s aluminium sides are eight(8) tiny pressure sensors. These sensors recognises a certain “customized degree of squeeze” to activate the Edge Sense features. Now to what the Edge Sense feature does.

When operating or holding the HTC U11 with one hand, you can squeeze both sides to initiate an action. Edge Sense has two customizable pressure points – a short squeeze or a long squeeze. Upon setting up the Edge Sense feature, you will be asked to adjust the pressure level for your own hand.

Afterwards, whenever you squeeze the sides of your device, it’s either an app is launched, or yourflashlight comes on, or perhaps your WiFi hotspot. The device squeeze could also take a screenshot, start voice recording or even launch your camera app. All depends on the customization and preferences you select in the Edge Sense menu.

DISPLAY

HTC U11 review – 5.5-inch QHD display

The screen of the HTC U11 is a 5.5-inch LCD display. The screen comes with a QHD resolution of 2560×1440 pixels that is sure to provide pure and crisp reproduction of colour and images. The U11 has slightly wide bezels (especially at the top and bottom) and there is no protection on the screen whatsoever. Guess you’d have to purchase a screen protector for the job.

PROCESSOR, OS & STORAGE

The HTC U11 uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset on a Octa-core processor with an amazing clock speed of 2.45GHz. The 4GB RAM and Android Nougat v7.1.1 operating system will do well with multitasking and fluid processing. Also, there’s an on-board storage of 64GB which is very much expandable to 2 Terabytes via micro SD card.

The HTC U11, according to information from the manufacturer, will receive the Android O update whenever it is being released.

CAMERA

A 12MP camera lens is engraved in the glossy glass back of the HTC U11. The rear camera is flanked to the left by dual LED light for clearer and bright images under low and high light.

On the front, the 16MP lens takes care of selfies and video chats. Trust the HTC cameras to deliver top quality images and videos.

BATTERY

The HTC U11 comes with a 3,000mAh non-removable battery pack. The battery lasts for long on the average and thanks to the USB Type-C and the Quick charge 3.0, the HTC U11 charges from the 0% mark to 100% pretty fast.
