Huawei has finally launched the Ascend 910 processor for which the announcement was initially made in 2018 flagship event. The company has also developed an all-scenario AI computing framework known as MindSpore.
According to the company, Ascend 910 is the world’s most powerful AI chipset.
Ascend 910 Chipset
Huawei Ascend 910 is a brand new processor made for AI model training. Ascend 910 is a part of the Huwaei’s series of Ascend-Max chipsets.
After a year of ongoing several research, tests, and developments, the Ascend 910 is capable of delivering performance with much lower power consumption. Ascend 910 AI processor consumes the power of just 310W for performing all types of heavy tasks. The chipset can produce 256 TeraFlopps for half-precision floating-point (FP16) operations. Eric
Xu, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman said, “Ascend 910 performs much better than we expected”. He went on further and said, “Without a doubt, it has more computing power than any other AI processor in the world.”
MindSpore: AI Computing Framework
As already mentioned earlier, Huawei has also developed an all-scenario AI computing framework called MindSpore. The company introduced this along with the all-new Ascend 910 chipset.
It has been developed to make AI application development easier. applications made using MindSpore are more pervasive and accessible. MindSpoer has an in-built model protection technology which protects the user’s data as well as the AI models.
MindSpore ensures efficient execution of the AI apps by using the least amount of resources with the highest possible OPS/W.
MindSpore’s AI framework is adaptive and platform friendly. It can work on platforms such as all devices, cloud services, edge, and IoT computing devices.
It is also expected that Huawei could make MindSpore an open-source platform in 2020 to increase AI adoption on a broader scale. The company has mentioned that if both the Ascend 910 and MindSpore is made to work together then they can train AI models fast as twice.
Huawei’s AI Strategy For The Future
The company has created a well-planned roadmap for its AI program. Huawei will look forward to investing in AI research, strengthen the existing portfolio and build a full-stack AI portfolio, and create an open-ecosystem and support talents.
Huawei wants to make AI a “true general-purpose technology.” The company is going to launch more AI products during the forthcoming Huawei Connect 2019 event. This event is to be held between 18th and 20th of September in Shanghai.
