Jolla launches Sailfish 3

The smartphone market has practically become a two-horse race between Android and iOS. Gone are the days when alternative mobile platforms such as Maemo and Meego tried to gain a foothold in the market. From those failed attempts, Jolla and its Sailfish operating system emerged. Now, in the Sailfish 3 version, the mobile platform shows that it’s still going on.

Sailfish 3 demonstrates Jolla’s interest in continuing with the project

The history of the Finnish company is colorful. Formed by former employees of Nokia, they tried to continue with what the old mobile giant tried to do and, for a while, succeeded. But after his successful crowdfunding of Jolla Phone, he began to fail when it came to maintaining his ability to create devices. In the end, he was forced to switch to a business that simply licensed his half-open, half-owner operating system, with very few customers in the consumer device market.

Probably not a surprise, then, that Jolla Sailfish 3 seems to be more oriented towards business use, with the addition of functions such as Mobile Device Management (MDM) and integrated VPN. There are even some things that should have been from the first day, such as external storage encryption and USB OTG support. There are also some improvements in the user interface, one of the key strengths and unique qualities of Sailfish.

So far, Jolla has kept quiet with business customers, but he probably has some if he can keep his business open for so long. As far as the consumer is concerned, he has adopted a rather strange strategy of official compatibility with Sony Xperia phones under his “Sailfish X“.

With Sailfish 3, Jolla extends that compatibility to include not only the most expensive Sony models. The Xperia XA2, XA2 Plus, and XA2 Ultra now give Sailfish OS fans a way to experience the platform, even if Jolla no longer makes its own devices.
