Kate Spade is one of the fashion brands like Micheal Kors and Skagen that ventured into the smartwatch market this year. Micheal Kors went down the Android wear path while Skagen and Kate Spade has gone for the Hybrid style. The New York fashion brand is launched their first ever connected device with the help of Fossil. The Kate Spade Metro Grand which costs about $233 is one of the long lists of smartwatches by Fossil this year which is at a figure of 300 different smartwatch collection.
The Kate Spade gear is aimed specifically at women, which is a good thing. The Kate Spade's smartwatch is based on the company's Metro Grand watch with the main differentiating factor being the slightly thicker casing and some extra function button on the side of the body. The added thickness is not too noticeable when on the wrist, and there is steel that stainless steel is covering underneath. Unlike some other smartwatches with plastic covering underneath, the stainless steel option gives a more premium product feel as the original Metro Grand.
The smartwatch case has a gold finish, manic pixie beautiful analogue watch face and nice straps, and does not in any way look like a gadget. It has this polished, expensive and well-made look on your wrist. On the downside, the Metro Grand is chunky and weighs a little bit on the wrist. It sits up on the wrist and could stand to be half the width although the shiny watch does not suggest any tech built-in. The watch face looks like a traditional Kate Spade watch, the same beauty of the hybrid smartwatch Android Wear.
At first glance, you could never know the Metro Grand was a smartwatch which is a nice thing for Kate Spade's fan who would like to maintain the watch look with a little-added functionality. The finished style is lovely and feminine with a considerably smaller size than most smartwatch and hybrid smartwatch. There are lines with no number placed around the watch face represents each hour, while 12 o'clock is represented with a Kate Spade logo which is an ace and at six o'clock with two champagne glasses.
Above the glasses are a cluster of crystals and a moon like a symbol that catches the eye. There are plain simple hands, which takes nothing away from the design while the word cheers are placed just below the spade symbol in the typical Kate Spade style. There are design options available with the same face design and a traditional buckle fastening strap. The gold model has a pale pink soft leather band and the silver model a grey one. The gold and silver casing have white faces while the rose gold casing has a soft leather strap and black face.
The 6 o'clock glasses, dimanté champagne bubble and spade logo at the top of the watch is an exquisite design with a nice dash of personality. The three buttons at the side have some customised functions. Ranging from displaying step progress to music or smartphone camera control and another time zone. Like most hybrid smartwatches it is powered by a coin cell battery that should last a maximum of six months.
