Meet PAL-V Flying Cars That May Cost You an Arm & a Leg

Talks about self-driving cars, hoverboards and jetpacks are becoming obsolete as PAL-V International B.V, a Dutch company known for developing roadable aircrafts launches the sales of its first commercial flying car models, the “PAL-V Liberty Pioneer” and “PAL-V Liberty Sport,” both which are three-wheeled motorcycles that transform into a gyrocopter. This means that these cars can travel by road and on air. The Liberty Sport model is regarded as the base model while Liberty Pioneer comes with higher premium trim.

The new two-seater flying vehicle manufacture, PAL-V has been working on this for nearly ten years in other to meet all safety standards laid down by regulatory bodies all over the world and also take necessary measures to avoid common pilot errors during production. Now the flying car technology has in no doubt reached a level of ripeness to actually to start the PAL-V flying car sale for transportation.

“After years of hard work, beating the technical and qualification challenges, our team succeeded in creating an innovative flying car that complies with existing safety standards, determined by regulatory bodies around the world,” says the company’s CEO Robert Dingemanse.

He adds:

“This truly is a pivotal time in aviation and mobility history.”

After nearly a decade of hard work, the manufacturer has proven beyond measure that flying cars are the future as they will make transportation easier and faster especially in a place like Lagos, Nigeria with everyday traffic jams. Although the PAL-Vs need an about 500ft runway to take-off and it 100ft to land.

The petrol engine powered gyrocopters, PAL-V Liberty Pioneer & PAL-V Liberty Sport, are designed to cruise at low altitudes, below 4,000ft. Both PAL-V vehicles feature a light body weight giving it a top speed of up to180 km/h (112 mph) on land and in air. This means the flying car engine is light.

The design looks more like an ordinary sports car when on the road and like a chopper when on air. The rotor blades and tail are designed to fold up automatically when it lands and switched to a driving mode with just a push of a button: all thanks to advanced gyrocopter technology. Unusually, it leans sideways to turn like a regular motorcycle, a solution pioneered by the Carver vehicle, also produced by a Dutch company.

The dimensions of the PAL-V flying car do not exceed those of a regular car. It therefore, blends perfectly with everyday road traffic, yet offers a new level of mobility. However, a sport pilot certificate and a driving license will probably be required by the owner.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that this slice of the future will cost you an arm and a leg. The prototype model flown in 2012 for a test was around $300,000. Therefore, you should expect something higher than that; the Liberty Sport costs around $399,000 while the premium Pioneer is $599,000. That’s exclusive of taxes, mind you. PAL-V does offer down payment options, but those go only as low as $10,000.
