At the Build event 2019 which took place earlier this year, Microsoft announced a new Windows Terminal for Windows 10 Laptops and PCs. Now the Windows terminal is finally launched on the Windows store. Before the release of the new windows terminal, the developers were using codes available on GitHub.
The new Windows Terminal is new a fast, efficient and powerful terminal application which allows you to access the old command prompt line, PowerShell and the Windows Subsystem for Linux(WSL) at one place. This is a preview version so it will have some usability issues and bugs.
The feature of the modern Windows Terminal includes multiple tab support, Unicode and UTF-8 character support, a GPU accelerator text rendering engine and customized themes, styles and configurations.
Although the company has added the theme customization options for the developers you need to first tweak the JSON file to enable all the customization options on the new Terminal app. This new Terminal is lacking full functionality as it is a preview version. Microsoft has also provided instruction to change the background image by configuring settings and key binds in the JSON file.
The GPU accelerator text rendering engine feature of the new Windows Terminal is based on DirectX which enable this terminal app to show text characters, symbols and glyphs present on your PC. It also has emoji support.
If your interested in using the new Windows Terminal than you need to first make sure that you are using Windows 10 version 183762 and this build must include the Windows 10 May 2019 update. You can also access the modern Windows Terminal if you have Windows Insider build installed on your PCs.
