Motorola Moto G6 VS Motorola Moto G5

Motorola Moto G6 VS Motorola Moto G5: Why the Moto G6 is everything the Moto G5 never was. It’s been a tough ride for Motorola in the smartphone market. The company has faced a lot of challenges over years; including ownership changes and branding strategies. But despite all their obstacles, the “Moto” smartphone line has been consistent in its output especially the Moto G series. The 2017 Motorola Moto G5 was met with positive reviews. And was among the best budget smartphones of the year. Even some industry great minds named it their best budget smartphone for 2017.

Now after one year of its release, Motorola is back again with the Moto G6. The Motorola Moto G6 comes in three versions; the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play. How well will the Moto G6 fair in the market? With so many companies manufacturing great budget smartphones, can the Moto G6 win it this year? Will be too early to debate on that. But first, let’s see how the new Moto G6 match up against last year’s great Moto G5.

The Motorola Moto G5 features a simple design with front glass and aluminum unibody. While the Motorola Moto G6 features curved edges. And follows the trending front and back glass with aluminum frame. And Motorola has ended up reducing the thickness, which is a good move. The Moto G5 measures 9.3mm in thickness, which is bulky in modern day design. While the Moto G6 measures 8.3mm, although not slim enough but it still a welcome development.

The Motorola Moto G6 weighs 167 grams which are 22 grams heavier than Moto G5’s 145 grams weight. Their fingerprint sensor is mounted inside their home button. The Moto G5 features just a single rear camera inside the circle frame at the back. While the Moto G6 packs a dual rear camera inside the circle frame. The Moto G6 is splash resistant while the Moto G5 isn’t. The Moto G5 comes in Lunar Grey, Fine Gold, and Sapphire Blue body colors. While the Moto G6 comes in Deep Indigo, Silver, Blush and Black body colors.

Motorola Moto G6 VS Motorola Moto G5 – The Display

The Motorola Moto G6 follows the trend by featuring a bezel-less display with 18:9 aspect ratio. While Moto G5 has sizeable bezels at the top and bottom. And comes with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Being a budget smartphone sees both the Moto G6 and G5 featuring the IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. Which measures 5.7 inches on the Moto G6 and 5.0 inch on the Moto G5.

The Moto G6 comes with a slightly better display resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. While the Moto G5 features a 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. The 441 pixels per inch density of the Moto G5 is better to the 424 pixels per inch density of the Moto G6. Let’s not forget the Moto G5 features a 5.0-inch screen which helps in the PPI density.

Motorola Moto G6 VS Motorola Moto G5 – The Camera

The Moto G5 however, features a rear camera with LED flash. The camera lens has a 13MP f/2.0 aperture resolution which isn’t all that bad. At the front, is a 5MP f/2.2 aperture shooter. The Moto G6 houses a better camera quality.

Motorola Moto G6 VS Motorola Moto G5 – Hardware and Software

The upgrade in hardware of the Moto G6 isn’t all that fascinating to me. The Moto G5 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset which carries 1.4GHz Octa-core processor. While the Moto G6 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset carrying a 1.8GHz Octa-core processor. While the Snapdragon 450 chipset is better than the 430 chipsets, the difference isn’t all that big and might not even be noticed.

The Moto G5 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with a planned upgrade for Android 8.0 Oreo. While the Moto G6 runs on the latest Android 8.0 Oreo. The Moto G5 comes in either 2GB RAM with 16GB storage or 3GB RAM with 32GB storage. While the Moto G6 comes in either 3GB RAM with 32GB storage or 4GB RAM with 64GB storage.

The Moto G6 comes with a slightly better battery life. The G6 packs a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery. While the Moto G5 packs a non-removable Li-Ion 2800 mAh battery. Both devices offer fast battery charging but of different version.

Motorola Moto G6 VS Motorola Moto G5 – The Price

The Moto G5 is available for about $180 (N63,000). While the Moto G6 isn’t all that cheap as it goes for around $299 (N104,650). The Moto G6 meets most criteria for smartphone users especially the bezel-less display and large screen size. And comes in cheap in my opinion.
