Though the Moto Z Play can’t be called a flagship device, it no doubt is a high-end modern Android smartphone, with advanced specs. This fact is all the more accentuated with the support the Moto Z Play has for Moto Mods, smartphone-transforming gadgets from Motorola.

Moto Z Play Specifications

Display & Design

The Moto Z Play has a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a Full HD (1920 * 1080) pixel resolution and 403ppi density which produces on-screen images and icons as clearly as you would find in any high-end modern smartphone.

Motorola Moto Z Play

The display on the Moto Z Play is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass for extra protection and security is guaranteed with a fingerprint scanner embedded in its physical home button.

The Moto Z Play is designed similarly to other smartphones in the Motorola Moto Z series. It is just 6.99mm thick, weighs 165 grams and its body features a nano-coating which makes it water repellent.

Memory & Performance

The Moto Z Play comes with 3GB of RAM and comes in two internal storage variants which are 32GB and 64GB. The internal storage in both variants can be expanded up to 2 Terabytes 😮 with an external micro SD.

The powerhouse of the Moto Z Play is manned by a Snapdragon 625 processor with eight cores and a speed of 2GHz. Taking the position of powerhouse assistant is an Adreno 506 GPU unit which takes care of the graphics operations in the device.

The Motorola smartphone packs a 3,510mAh battery equipped with Motorola’s Turbo charging technology which allows you to quickly ramp up the battery percentage in times when it’s urgently needed.

The Moto Z Play comes with a host of connectivity features which I’d try to break down here.

First off, the Moto Z Play comes in two SIM slot variants, the first with a single Nano-SIM slot and the second with a Dual-SIM slot, both of which support 4G LTE network connectivity fully.

It also comes with Wi-Fi 802.11a with a 5GHz band and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n with a 5GHz band. With these, you are assured of even faster connectivity to the internet and file sharing.

The smartphone comes with Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (LE) wireless technology which allows for speedy transfer of files between devices. It also possesses NFC support which makes mobile payments and on-the-go file sharing an easier task.

The Moto Z Play comes with a Moto Mods connector and support which allows you to add extra functionality to the smartphone with external gadgets and accessories called Moto Mods. It possesses a USB Type-C port which gives it USB OTG support and allows reverse-charging in the device.

The Moto Z Play offers excellent mobile photography potential with a 16MP main camera unit at the rear which is accompanied by a dual-tone LED flash, Laser Autofocus and Phase-Detection-Auto-Focus (PDAF) which reduces the time it takes for the phone to focus on an image and save the picture to the barest minimum.

That’s not all. The Moto Z Play sports a 5MP camera unit at the front which uses a wide-angle lens and is equipped with a LED flash for taking amazing selfies at any time of the day.

Software and Hardware

The Moto Z Play possesses a front-ported loudspeaker and includes support for 3-mic audio technology, the same audio technology in use in the iPhone 6 series. It runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box.
