PayPal Holdings, Inc., is a US company operating a global online payment system. It is a highly respected Internet payment company. It functions as an acquirer, performing payment processing for online vendors, auction sites and other commercial users, for a fee. Their headquarter is located at 2211 North First Street, San Jose, CA 95131.
Established in 1998 as Confinity, the company had its initial public offering in 2002 and became a wholly-owned subsidiary of eBay later that year. eBay spun off PayPal 5 years ago. Paypal ranked 222nd on the 2018 Fortune 500 of the largest United States corporations by revenue.
PayPal bought the VeriSign payment solution in 2005 to expand its e-commerce business and offer more security support. The company announced a partnership with MasterCard that resulted in the development and launch of the PayPal Secure Card service, a software that lets customers make payments on sites that do not accept PayPal directly by generating a special, single-use MasterCard number for every checkout.
By 2010, PayPal had more than 100 million active user accounts in 190 markets via 25 different nations. In July 2011, 14 alleged members of the Anonymous hacktivist group were charged with attempting to disrupt PayPal’s operations.
As of last year, PayPal is operating in 202 markets and has 286 million active, registered accounts. The company lets customers send, receive, and hold funds in 25 currencies worldwide. From 2009 to 2016, PayPal operated Student Accounts, letting parents set up a student account, transfer cash into it, and obtain a debit card for student use.
