The Korean company have a series of virtual reality accessories on its platform and the Samsung Gear VR is the fifth and latest VR device from the tech giants. In terms of phone accessories, the new Samsung Gear VR is one of the best and comes with a just added motion controller. It also comes with a slightly improved streamlined design and a USB-C connector that attaches directly into Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8 devices.

The recent VR additions have offered more or less the same features with only a few changes added to the device. The big draw here is the newly included motion controller which allows you to control the action. The just added features, however, drives the price of the pair up a little bit but it is still very much affordable. Another addition worthy of note here is the Orchid Grey finish to match Samsung’s new smartphones. The $130 device still offers a completely wireless experience using your Samsung smartphone to display videos, apps and games.

The quality of the experience you get depends on the type of smartphone you are using with the headset. Samsung as expected ushers you towards using the Galaxy S8 and the widescreen it offers, however, the S7 Edge, S7, S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge plus and Note 5 are all supported too. Considering the same 101-degree viewing angle that was improved in the recently released VR devices, the Gear VR is still about on the same level with the PlayStation VR in terms of visuals.

The room inside the device ensures that past issues due to fogging is no longer a thing to worry about. The new controller is similar to the HTC Vive controller with a punchy trigger and elevated touchpad. Although there is no innovative design here, the device matches the fresh aesthetic of the headset itself. It features a mixture of gloss and matte finishing and is simple to pair with your phone. The motion controls add a level of interactivity that is sorely missing from the likes of Gear VR suite.

The Samsung Gear VR has a 48.1 x 38.2 x 108.1mm size, and accessing back button, volume controls, touch pad and the home screen is now very much easy, gone are the days of fiddling around looking for buttons on the side of the headset. The trigger opens up a new way to get around the new virtual world Samsung has created and offers a lot of potential for many of first-person shooter type games.

The experience is similar to the ones you have with Google Daydream’s accessory with a minimum amount of depth. However, the new controller makes jumping between videos, shooting around menus and playing games much more fun experience than any before it. With the robust and continuously expanding collection of VR content and the new Samsung Gear VR is a nice recommendation. It has a lighter and more comfortable and a nice fit with older Samsung phones. However, the Gear VR is still very much exclusive to Samsung Galaxy.
