Immortal Ssds
Immortal Ssds

Whether you use an SSD or an HDD (or even a mixture of the two), all drives will eventually ‘die’. After all, traditional hard drives develop ‘bad sectors’ over time, while SSDs love to die without any kind of warning. That said, if you don’t know, if a NAND chip ‘dies’ inside your SSD, the entire drive will be unusable!

In short, we are basically talking about one of the major disadvantages of SSDs, since it is almost impossible to know when they will be able to ‘die’.

However, it seems that there is already a solution to this problem! Samsung has a new system capable of detecting faults in each memory chip in its SSDs, making it possible to move data to free zones without problems.

Yes, you will have less storage available! But this is certainly better than keeping the drive unusable, and of course, running out of data.

Samsung is again promising Immortal SSDs!

Therefore, Samsung seems to be planning to launch this system (FIP – Fail-in-Place) with its next PCIe 4.0 drives. A technology that simply won’t let an SSD die, moving all data from the defective chips to other healthy chips within the NAND Flash memory array.

In fact, FIP goes a step further, since it is constantly monitoring the SSD, in order to understand if there are problems on the horizon so that no data is lost.

However, the technology will hit the market on the SS17s PM1733 and PM1735, which are more focused on the business and data center market. However, it is expected that there will be a ‘push’ to take this technology to the traditional consumer market as soon as possible, as it is something that no other manufacturer has available to ‘normal’ users.
