Yet another ‘bezel-less’ laptop in the mix: the Gigabyte Aero 15 gaming laptop is a combination of many things, no one being undesirable. As a modern gaming laptop, this device comes with a lot of promise that makes it a worthy contender with some of the big names in the game.
For starters, the design on the Aero 15 is something worth mentioning. While there are a few laptop manufacturers that have adopted the borderless design, Gigabyte is a proud member of that elite gang. When you combine this exquisite design with the high-end internals, it leaves less to be wanted.
Packed into the body of a 14-inch laptop, the Aero 15 has an attractive chassis with squarish edges. The side bezels have been greatly reduced, leaving only 5mm of space between the screen and the side edges. In addition, the borderless design means that the webcam has been repositioned and now sits below the display - on the hinge. While this isn’t convenient for most people, frequent usage will take the awkwardness away. The Aero 15 is made mostly of metal giving it a premium look and feel.
Going downwards, the keyboard is almost overflowing into the edges of the laptop. This is partly due to the included number pad and partly due to the reduced area of the laptop generally.
At under 20mm thick and 2.1 kg heavy, Gigabyte’s Aero 15 is a very light and thin laptop; actually one of the most ultra-portable gaming laptops. As a result, you can easily slip in or slip out this laptop into your backpack as soon as you’re done without any struggle.
The Aero 15 comes in two display models: one with a Full HD 144 Hz LED display and another with an Ultra HD display with Nvidia G-Sync. However, both models are 15.6 inches long (diagonally).
As stated previously, due to the near bezel-less design, this laptop fits into a frame that should otherwise be used for a 14-inch laptop. Sitting below the screen is a 1080p webcam for face-to-face chatting and photo capturing.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is a full-sized one with a number pad as stated already. For night-time gaming or typing, there is an RGB Per-Key backlighting that is powered by Gigabyte’s Fusion technology. This means that you can configure the individual key backlight using software as per your gaming preferences.
The touchpad is a standard one that measures 4.1 x 2.7 inch and has support for the basic two-finger gestures.
Under the hood of the Aero 15 is an eight-generation Intel Core i7-8750H CPU clocked at 2.2GHz. This hecta-core processor can reach a frequency of 4.1GHz. In addition, a high-end Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU (with 6GB of VRAM) and 16gigs of DDR4 RAM are included.
For storage, there are two major options: 512GB SATA 3 SSD or a faster 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD.
A 94.24 Wh Li-Po battery is at the back of the Aero 15. This large battery capacity ensures that the laptop keeps running the show even long after the external power has been cut off. On average, Gigabyte promises that the Aero can deliver about 10 hours of use on battery.
Ports and Connectivity
The Gigabyte Aero 15 gaming laptop comes with a wide array of ports and connectivity options. This array includes a Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB 3.1 ports (Gen 1), one USB 3.1 port (Gen 2), an HDMI 2.0 port, a mini DisplayPort, a fast SD card reader, RJ-45 port, and finally a headphone/microphone jack.
For wireless connectivity, there’s Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11ac).
Pricing and Availability
For the base model of the Gigabyte Aero 15 that ships with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU, you can get it for a starting price of $2000. The more advanced variant with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 for $2300. Finally, the Ultra HD display model would set you back $2400.
