Microsoft has officially announced that a bug has been found in its Windows 10 operating system which can stop the VPN services. This big is included in the Windows 10 May 2019 update. This bug hampers the functions of your system thus it stops working and shows the following error code, "0xc000005."
According to the support page, this bug is found to present in Remote Access Connection Manager also known as RASMAN. RASMAN is required by VPN services to function properly.
Microsoft says "This issue only occurs when a VPN profile is configured as an Always On VPN (AOVPN) connection with or without device tunnel. This does not affect manual only VPN profiles or connections.”.
However, this bug will not affect the machines whose VPN profiles and connections are set to manual only. Microsoft reports that you can also come across to another error relating to RASMAN which may stop working and will display the error code, "0xc0000005."
Microsoft also warns that "the users can also receive an error in the Application section of Windows logs in Event Viewer with 1000 referencing ‘svchost.exe_RasMan’ and ‘rasman.dll’.”
How To Fix This Bug?
Microsoft has said that you can manually fix this issue. However, the automatic patch fixing this bug will be released by the end of this month.
- Open the Windows Registry editor and move to the following subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection
- Now change the value of the setting AllowTelementary to 1 (Basic), 2(Enhanced) or 3(Full) according to your choice.
There is also an alternative method to this, you can also change the Telementary values in Group Policy Settings.
Navigate to this path: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Data Collection and Preview Builds\Allow Telemetry.
Now enable the Safe Policy Setting and configure it to 1 (Basic), 2(Enhanced) or 3(Full) depending on your choice.
