The fitness tracker offers a whole lot more than just simple step tracking or heart rate monitoring. It has a sensor that is capable of estimating body fat. The TomTom Touch tells you how much of your body is made of fat and how much muscle you carry. It bridges the gap between basic fitness tracking and advanced sports fitness tracking device like Fitbit and the likes. The TomTom has a very good USP and has a great chance of getting a whole new category of customer.

According to analysts, evidence of the behaviour of fitness tracker buyers has shown that most people who buy an activity monitoring band are already quite fit. TomTom Touch, however, is capable of telling how fat you are which translates to a whole new reason to get the fitness tracker. In terms of the design, The TomTom is not much to look at with a detachable module, difficult clasp and rubber band. The clasp is the type where you would have to force a pin through the hole which proves tricky most time and easily come off.

Compared to the effort put into the design by the likes of Misfit, Apple and Fitbit, the TomTom is very much behind in this front. It comes with various colour variants like purple, orange and blue. It is more of a generic fitness tracker band apart from the silver circle just below the display. Unlike other fitness trackers, the display does not come up with a gesture like raising the wrist, you would have to wake it up by pressing the silver button on the top below the display. When awake you can swipe the screen to navigate through for activity tracking, then you have to wake it again for another reason and it goes on and on. It will get to a point when this becomes frustrating and is one of the negativity about the Touch. The screen has a low resolution monochrome OLED display that shows time in the home screen and a circle that indicates step goal progress. Although it is not fancy it provides clarity in all environment.

The Touch also shows basic notifications, however, this is limited to only text messages and calls which more or less serve as an alert to pick up your phone. It offers standard fitness tracking like step tracking, heart rate monitoring and sleep tracking. In addition, it also tracks distance and calories burned, all these data are available in the app where you can break the data down and plot it across time. You can also set fitness goals like sport, weight and step goals, this can be running, steps or weight (muscle composition).

The key feature of the TomTom Touch is its ability to track body composition and tells you the percentage of muscle and fat in the body. This is done by sending an undetectable electrical pulse from one foot which then goes around the body and comes back through the other sensor. From the way, it travelled it can estimate the percentage of the body that is made up of fat or muscle. The device has an IPX7 water resistance and promises a five-day battery life.
