Vernee Thor Plus Review, a modest mobile with an incredible battery

Vernee is a company that through out its history has manufactured several economic smartphones such as the Vernee Thor E, which is a good mid-range device. On the other hand, we also have the Vernee Thor Plus, which is one of the latest models that this company has manufactured. This handset boasts a huge 6200 mAh battery and a completely metallic design for a price of around $2135. It certainly sounds like a “good deal”, but before saying that first let’s go over all its features.

Vernee Thor Plus Package

This phone comes in a nice, but simple white box with the company logo engraved on the bottom area of the front. On the back side, we will find standard information about the device. This box has dimensions of 17.30 x 9.80 x 5.20 cm and a weight of 382 grams. Within it we will find the following:

  • 1 x Vernee Thor Plus.
  • 1 x Power adapter.
  • 1 x USB cable.
  • 1 x SIM ejector.
  • 1 x User manual.

Design and construction of the Vernee Thor Plus

If we talk about the design of the Vernee Thor Plus, we must say that this is not its forte, as it does not have a stylish appearance or something by a style that makes it stand out, especially if we compare it with other economic models of full screen. Instead, it has a classic design with the respective bevelled on the sides, although these are quite reduced.

In more detail, the terminal is made of metal, specifically an aluminium alloy with CNC processing, a back cover with  3D surface and a metallic matte texture. We also have the fact that this phone has dimensions of 15.30 x 7.67 x 0.87 cm, where what is most impressive is the thinness (0.87 cm) you have considered a 6200 mAh battery pack. Also, we weight 191 grams.

We also can choose between two different colours: black or gold. In the back, we have what is his main camera next to his flash located in the upper zone, and a little lower is engraved the logo of the manufacturer.

Regarding the front side we have the screen 5.5 inches, above this, we located the secondary camera. Below the screen, we have the fingerprint scanner which also functions as a start button. Also, we can choose between using the virtual keys on the screen or the physical capacitive.

On the right side, we have the buttons for volume control as well as the power button. While on the left side we have the slot to insert the SIM card (s), where the type of card supported is Nano SIM. We also have a dedicated button that activates a power saving mode, which will allow us to use the phone for several days.

Finally, we also find a micro USB port and as far as the speaker this leaves much to be desired, although this is normal on the phones of this range.

Vernee Thor Plus Screen

This terminal comes with a SUPER AMOLED screen with an HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels) with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. To be honest, the resolution is a bit disappointing, but it makes up for it with about 450 NITS of brightness making it look pretty crisp and vibrant and even better than some inexpensive 1080p panels. It is also coated with a curved 2.5D crystal to give it a more premium feel.

Hardware and Performance of Vernee Thor Plus

Here there is not much to emphasise since the Vernee Thor Plus counts on quite standard technical specifications of phones in this range. Firstly, we have an eight-core MediaTek MTK6753 processor running at 1.3 GHz. Accompanying this processor, we have an ARM Mali-T720 GPU.

As for the combination of memory, we have 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which is expandable by microSD cards up to 128 GB. As you will realise, the set of technical specifications is quite decent but is optimised. On most budget phones, games like Asphalt 8 are delayed, but for the Vernee Thor Plus, we were surprised at the fact that it runs with outstanding performance in addition to other 3D games.

If we look at the benchmark, it actually confirms that we are talking about modest specs, getting about 37634 points in AnTuTu, 625 points (one core) and 2705 points (multi-core) in Geekbench.

Vernee Thor Plus Software

As expected, the Vernee Thor Plus comes with the Android operating system, but in version 7.0 (Nougat). However, just as other companies have their custom interface layer like MIUI (Xiaomi), Flyme (Meizu), among others, Vernee also has its own called VOS.

This system based on Android is quite fluid and fast, so we will not experience any type of delay, in addition, to meet the classic features of Nougat, there is also some motion controls that work quite well. All this in a very attractive interface.

Vernee Thor Plus Camera

The Vernee Thor Plus has a rear (main) camera of 13 MP , is able to take photos with dimensions of 4160 x 3120 Pixels. However, the quality of the photos is quite poor and although the photos were taken on a cloudy day, they were still expected to be a little sharper and have more details. On the other hand, it is possible to get some attractive images for social networks.

It is also capable of recording videos at 1080p, which looks pretty good for a cheap phone, but of course we do not expect a result that impresses us. As for the camera for selfie (front) this is 8 MP, which takes some photos that leave much to be desired and is only capable of recording videos in 480p.

Some of the functions of the camera include: auto focus, continuous shooting, face detection, HDR, touch focus, white balance setting, phase detection, and more.

Vernee Thor Plus Battery

As we mentioned at the beginning, the Vernee Thor Plus has a huge 6200 mAhnon-removable battery , so the duration will be one of the best we can get on any phone, especially if we use the power saving mode.

This phone is able to provide literally several days of use without the need to connect it to a power outlet. We can get the battery to last up to 5 days (yes, it has read well) with an average use and activating the ultra-energy-saving mode from time to time, and you might even be able to get a little more energy time.

Finally, the charging time is too short as it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to charge it completely thanks to the charger that comes in the package.

Connectivity of Vernee Thor Plus

In terms of wireless connectivity, we have the usual: WIFI: 802.11a / b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. Supported networks are as follows:

Final Words

The Vernee Thor Plus does not look exceptional but stands out in features that lack other budget phones. The gigantic 6200 mAh battery works great, the display is one of the best of its kind, the metal construction of the phone feels nice and sturdy and as far as overall performance is not the best, but it is quite impressive considering its spectrum.

In the contrary aspects to emphasise, we have the common ones in the majority of these telephones, which are a bad camera and a speaker of low quality, although also it is worth mentioning the low of its screen.

In summary, I was pleasantly surprised that the Vernee Thor Plus is a fairly good economic phone with some outstanding features that other phones lack, even though it is not a perfect device.
