Both Mi Max phones feature a front glass with an aluminum unibody. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 features a single rear camera and fingerprint sensor. Whereas, the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 features a dual rear camera system and fingerprint sensor. The top and bottom bezels on the Mi Max 3 is slimmer compared to that of the Mi Max 2. This is because of the new Xiaomi Mi Max 3 sports an 18:9 aspect ratio display. While the Mi Max 2 sports a 16:9 aspect ratio display.

In terms of dimensions and weight, the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 got thicker and heavier. It measures 176.2 x 87.4 x 8 mm and weighs 221 grams. Whereas, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 measures 174.1 x 88.7 x 7.6 mm and weighs 211 grams. The Mi Max 2 is only available in Gold and Matte Black body colors. While, the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 comes in three different body colors; Black, Champagne Gold, and Blue.

How bigger can the display of a phablet get? Well, the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has all the answers. The new phablet smartphone sports a big 6.9 inches IPS LCD touchscreen with a 79.8% screen-to-body ratio. The display sports an 18:9 aspect ratio, 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution and 350 pixels per inch density.

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 sports a 6.44 inches IPS LCD touchscreen with a 74% screen-to-body ratio. The display of the Mi Max 2 features a 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio and 342 pixels per inch density.

The front-facing camera of the Mi Max 2 features a 5MP selfie sensor with f/2.0 aperture. Whereas, the front-facing camera of the Mi Max 3 sports an 8MP selfie sensor with f/2.0 aperture. Powering the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset, an Octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz and Adreno 509 graphics processing unit. While, powering the Mi Max 2 is Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, an Octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz and Adreno 506 graphics processing unit.

The Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is available in two variant of memory option; the 4GB memory with 64GB storage and the 6GB memory with 128GB storage. While the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is available in only a 4GB memory variant but with three storage options of 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 runs on MIUI 8.5 skin with Android 7.1.1 Nougat underneath it. Whereas, the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 runs on MIUI 9.5 skin with Android 8.1 Oreo underneath it.
